A deadly shooting incident in the Columbia, South Carolina area is under investigation after an overnight exchange of gunfire involving Richland County Sheriff’s deputies left one person dead and prompted a large law enforcement response.
According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, deputies were responding to multiple reports of gunfire in residential neighborhoods in northeast Richland County during the early morning hours when they encountered armed individuals and came under heavy fire. Deputies returned fire during the confrontation, which authorities described as a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.
Officials said the incidents began shortly after midnight when deputies responded to separate reports of homes and vehicles being struck by gunfire in neighborhoods near the Summit area of Columbia. As deputies investigated, K-9 units tracked suspects into a residential area where multiple individuals allegedly opened fire on law enforcement officers.
Authorities reported that more than 70 shots may have been fired during the exchange. Three deputies returned fire while seeking cover, and additional units were dispatched to assist. Sheriff Lott stated that no deputies were injured despite the intensity of the gunfire.
One individual, identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as 18-year-old Qwa’Maurie Deaver of Columbia, died during the incident. Another person was detained, while investigators believe additional suspects may have fled the area. Authorities indicated that as many as ten individuals could have been involved.
Law enforcement agencies spent much of the day processing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing body-camera footage. Investigators are also seeking surveillance and doorbell camera footage from residents living near Summit Ridge Drive, Fox Grove Circle, Royce Court, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Officials have not yet announced a motive for the shootings, and the investigation remains active. Authorities believe several overnight shooting incidents may be connected, though they have not released further details regarding potential suspects or charges.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department with any information that may assist investigators. Additional updates are expected as authorities continue examining evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly Columbia-area shooting.
